FA Affiliate Tutor Licence

To deliver FA courses, you must be a licenced FA Affiliate Tutor. Tutor licences cover the full breadth of education areas across the grassroots game; coach education, medical, safeguarding, refereeing and leadership. Each licence is outlined within the licence requirements document which highlights the qualification requirements, minimum delivery and expected rates of pay.

Tutors are affiliated to a county or region and this denotes the area in which the minimum delivery requirements should be delivered. Whilst The FA license tutors, they are employed by approved centres, the majority of which are County FAs.

Why is there an application process?

The application process ensures a fair and transparent approach to tutor licencing across every area of education. However, as all open applications are created by regional demand, there are only a limited number of licences available. The application process, therefore, determines the most appropriate selection, in what is a highly competitive recruitment phase. As an open process, the focus is on evidence provided by individuals through their application forms, which are assessed.

What is the application process?

The process will vary depending on the type of licence you apply for. The first stage for all licences is the application form. This gives applicants the opportunity to evidence their skills and experiences against the requirements of the licence they’re applying for. Applicants are scored against a matrix and the strongest are taken to the next stage. The second stage of a coach education licence application involves a face-to-face interview and other assessment tasks.

For other licence types the next stage will often be a phone conversation and an opportunity to observe a course and co-tutor a section to assess suitability. Within the application process everything is double scored and standardised to ensure fairness and objectivity.

If I apply, will I get feedback?

If you submit an application but are unsuccessful in moving to the next stage, you can request feedback. Due to the volume of applications we receive, feedback will be generic, based on that application phase, but will include the common areas of strength and where unsuccessful applicants can improve. If you attend an interview or selection event for a licence, you'll be able to request personalised feedback and will be informed of how and when to do this at the appropriate time.

If successful, how will I be supported as a tutor?

If you're successful in securing an FA Affiliate Tutor licence you'll be supported by a tutor developer. They'll be your main point of contact and will work with you to develop your tutoring skills and will always support your on-going professional development. Tutor developers will also complete development visits for each tutor allocated to them and will help support initial training with newly recruited tutors.
