Oxford City Host Woking in FA Trophy Quarter-Finals
Oxford City continue their campaign to reach Wembley in the FA Trophy this weekend, as the Hoops host National League side Woking in the quarter-finals on Saturday 1 March (3pm kick-off).
Ross Jenkins’ side commenced their Trophy campaign back in November at the MGroup Stadium, where an emphatic 5-0 victory over Sporting Khalsa sealed passage through to the third round.
There, Oxford City once again played host, this time to Hadley. Zac McEachran opened the scoring within the first minute, with the visitors levelling from the penalty spot five minutes into the second half. However, Corie Andrews’ goal nine minutes from time sealed a 2-1 win for the Hoops.
The fourth-round draw handed Oxford City a trip to Biggleswade Town at the start of January, with three second-half goals for the visitors securing an impressive 3-0 victory.
The fifth round arguably provided Oxford City with their most impressive win thus far in their FA Trophy campaign. The Hoops hosted Forest Green Rovers, last season a League Two side – and a 15th-minute effort from Josh Parker separated the two teams come the final whistle to set up Oxford City’s quarter-final tie at the start of March.
Best of luck to Ross, his staff, and all the players in the quarter finals.
A forthcoming anniversary…
It’s fitting that we celebrate Oxford City’s progression in the FA Trophy, as March will mark the anniversary of the Hoops bringing the Trophy back to the county in 1906.
That year, Oxford City were tasked with overcoming Bishop Auckland in the final, and needed to endure wintry conditions in Stockton-on-Tees on 24 March 1906.
The game itself needed to be stopped for 10 minutes during the first half, due to the snowstorm that fell upon the final. However, the conditions and stoppage didn’t prevent Oxford City from sealing a 3-0 victory to bring silverware home.
The occasion was made more special by the incredible 300 Oxford City supports that, despite the horrendous weather, braved the 230-mile journey north to support the team, travelling on a special train that was decorated with flags in the blue and white team colours.
Here's hoping this year will see this season’s Oxford City team bring the trophy back to Oxfordshire…albeit following a final played in warmer weather!
