British Transplant Games

Oxfordshire Prepares to Host British Transplant Games

Events will be taking place across the county.

Oxfordshire will play host to the Westfield Health British Transplant Games this summer between Thursday 31 July and Sunday 3 August – with adult 6-a-side and children’s 5-a-side football fixtures forming part of the games on 2 August 2025.

The British Transplant Games aim to raise awareness of life-saving benefits of organ transplantation, and demonstrate the transformative power of organ donation; encouraging transplant recipients to stay active post-recovery.

Transplanted athletes of all abilities, ranging from the age of 3 to over 80, from over 60 hospital teams across the UK, will represent their transplant unit in 24 different events with the support of family, friends and volunteers. Oxford-based teams won 14 gold, 11 silver, and 11 bronze medals at the 2024 Games in Nottingham last year.

With the support of key sponsors and regional partners, including Oxfordshire FA, the 2025 games will help  raise awareness whilst celebrate the gift of life, and supporting the transplant community.

Dr Paul Harden, of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, is Chair of Transplant Active and 2025 British Transplant Games. He said:
"It is an honour to chair this year’s British Transplant Games alongside my role as Chair of Transplant Active. Our new identity marks a significant step forward for the transplant community and reflects the charity’s ambition to empower transplant recipients to optimise their gift of life through an active lifestyle and raise awareness about the transformative power of organ donation. We warmly invite businesses, families, and the local community to support the games in Oxford, and I would like to thank the Oxford Kidney Unit Trust Fund for their generous support of the games. Together, we can celebrate the inspiring achievements of transplanted athletes and honour the gift of life through promoting the critical importance of organ donation."

Steve Purdham, Chairman of Westfield Health, added: “We’re proud to offer our continued support for the British Transplant Games, with 2025 marking our 17th year of being the lead sponsor. The games are a truly inspiring event that highlights the importance of organ donation while celebrating the resilience and determination of people who have received transplants. We look forward to bringing together the whole British transplant community in Oxford for the first time next year, to celebrate the gift of life and witness firsthand the extraordinary impact of the games.”

Jonathan Duckworth, Chief Executive of the Oxfordshire Football Association, which helps save the NHS in Oxfordshire £45 million every year by encouraging mental and physical health and wellbeing through its 170 local football clubs, emphasised that: “Supporting the 2025 Westfield Health British Transplant Games here in Oxford and across Oxfordshire through a festival of football on 2 August 2025 is an opportunity for everyone to play their part in promoting this vital lifesaving and lifechanging transplant treatments. Watch this space for more details and in the meantime please do look this week at the attached ways to get involved and volunteer to help.”
