This weekend will see second round ties in the Oxfordshire FA Charity Cup take place across the county, with all teams involved vying for a spot in the draw for the next stage.

The Charity Cup is one of our many historic and prestigious County Cup competitions, with the cup first contested in 1902/03. 

With such a strong heritage, and with the Charity Cup second round ties set for this weekend, it was timely and brilliant to this week hear from Bob Hamil, who contacted Oxfordshire FA to reminisce on his own experiences of playing in the competition in years gone by.

Bob recalled: “I did my teacher training at Culham College from 1965 to 1968. One of my fond memories was being a member of our college football team, which won the Oxfordshire FA Charity Cup for the first time in 1968. That year also marked our centenary season.

“Whenever team members meet, or in contact, the cup is always on the ‘agenda’. We’re all in our ‘late’ 70s, yet remember the occasion so well…however, the scorer of our first goal from one yard remembers it as a 30-yard ‘screamer’. How some memories fade!”

Bob kindly provided some memorabilia from Culham’s win in 1968, which truly capture the history and heritage of the competition.
