The Power of Football

Football is played everywhere; it provides a common ground for people from diverse backgrounds to connect.

Team sports develop communication skills, self-confidence, self-respect, trust and social networks. Success on the field, whether through scoring goals or mastering new skills, can translate into increased confidence in other areas of life, empowering individuals to pursue their goals and career aspirations.

We are providing free football sessions for refugee Ukrainian and other children.

The programme is currently open for anyone aged from 7 to 12 and to help families to help with childcare provision needs which are a worrying barrier preventing many mothers especially from participating in physical activity for their health and wellbeing. Mental Health Foundation Research highlights the risk of poor mental health and developing mental health problems being greater for refugees who will be dealing with both pre and post-migration trauma.

Many of the refugee children and their families are living in hotels without access to outdoor space or being able to afford to travel and take part in sport and physical activity. Our projects also provide links into additional low-cost activities and support services such as Oxfordshire’s You Move programme and help linking displaced people into key services and support such as health centres, housing, and counselling.
